About the project

4. Why the FemBloc name?

In the face of gender-based violence, collective support and care are essential. That is why we have joined forces with various organizations to create a resilient network - a bloc - capable of supporting people who experience digital gender-based violence and of combatting it through policy and grassroots action.

5. What can I find on this site?

On the one hand, you can find resources on digital gender-based violence. Some of these have been developed by other groups and projects, while others have been created as part of the FemBloc project. You can also find out more about our project, or use our Contact form to get in touch with us for further information.

6. Who is this website for?

This website is for all the people who want to know more about FemBloc or about the work that has already been done on digital security and digital gender-based violence (see the section Resources).

7. Aside from the support and information helpline, what else is the FemBloc project involved in?

The FemBloc project is involved in several lines of work in relation to digital gender-based violence.

This includes research being undertaken on current legislation as regards digital gender-based violence in Catalonia, Spain, the European Union and further afield. This mapping exercise will help to provide information and support to those who need legal advice on digital gender-based violence. An intersectional framework has also been developed in conjunction with other grassroots organizations, which will serve as a guide for incorporating an intersectional perspective in the attention provided to support service users and in the project's internal operations.

In addition, FemBloc is rolling out a communication and advocacy strategy to continue to raise awareness about digital gender-based violence as a growing and oft-overlooked problem that must be addressed from a holistic perspective.

Concurrently, the project has carried out a mapping exercise of projects focused on digital gender-based violence, as well as other helplines and services providing attention to those experiencing it. This research has served not only as inspiration for the FemBloc service, but has also enabled us to identify different needs that have not been addressed thus far, and to create alliances with other projects and initiatives to whom users can be referred during the operation of our information and support helpline.

FemBloc is involved in many other initiatives and activities, such as the publication of research articles and a learning guide based on the experience of setting up a support helpline.

8. Why a feminist and anti-racist approach?

FemBloc has grown from the work of a group of feminists as response to the gender-based violence that LGBTI+ women and people face, and also takes into account intersections with other axes of discrimination such as race, disability, origin, age, etc.

Feminism places these inequalities under the spotlight and fights to bring them down, in order to achieve a world free of violence. That is why it is essential that the project takes a feminist and anti-racist approach.

9. Why is it only focused on digital gender-based violence?

While we believe it is essential to act against all forms of gender-based violence, wherever they may occur, many studies point to a lack of awareness concerning this particular type of violence, and an increase in the number of people experiencing it. We believe that digital gender-based violence should be tackled in the same way as any other kind of violence suffered by LGBTI+ women and people. However, due to its specific characteristics, we also believe that this requires a specific approach.

We aim to work together with similar service providers in Catalonia in order to provide comprehensive care and support.

10. Where is this project being carried out?

The project is being carried out in Catalonia because Catalan legislation has gone further than most in terms of dealing with digital gender-based violence within the European Union. It is our wish to work in an environment that appreciates the gravity and scale of this type of violence, and which can provide space to projects like FemBloc.

Nevertheless, FemBloc's resources can also be used by groups and individuals in Spain, Europe and the rest of the world. One of the aims of the project is to be able to replicate the initiative in other territories or communities in Europe, adapting it to different circumstances.
